I read about Library 2.0 while taking classes. I also read about Library 2.0 from the “official Joneslib site” and I am convinced that it is a great thing. But I don’t think it is a new thing.
Here are some reasons why Library 2.0 concepts will work for libraries and why they have already been working:
1. Libraries can always be changing, and they always have been. From card catalog to online catalog to interactive catalog with rating features, listening features and links to similar materials. The key is that this change is user centered.
2. Libraries are interactive spots and they have increasingly become more so. Gone are stodgy days of the high and mighty know-all reference librarian peering down at the patron from a heavy dark wood desk. Now we sit next the person asking the question, and more often than not, consult an online world where there are many experts available. Library 2.0 is about interacting, both in person and online with the patron and with the world beyond our library walls.
3. Libraries are a business and as said have customers. Listening to your customer is what libraries can do best. Bring on patron imput. We are already listening by offering a variety of materials and programs. Library 2.0 is just a word to remind us to keep it fresh, keep it up to date, and keep connecting with the community.
As pointed out by the newest email from American Libraries Direct: The Urban Dictionary now has a definition for librarian
Some of it is hilarious. Some makes me kinda sad. Librarians still have a long road ahead in terms of changing their image from “Those people who go off at you when you talk too loudly” to people who “love to help… aspire to make a difference in a constantly changing world, are some of the most interesting individuals you will ever meet, are more excited about technology then you think”
Definitely needs some more pizzaz, but finally a web site.
Sorry. I had a certain Ciara song in my head… blame it on having an adolescent music lover in the house…
At any rate: I did Step 1: Yippee!!
But then I clicked on step two and I didnt get anywhere. I guess it is time to consult the pirate!
Blogging is fun, finding the time to blog is hard!
